HISTORY OF STAB BODHI DHARMA
Background of Establishment
The development of Buddhism in the country, especially in North Sumatra Province, in the 80s experienced quite rapid progress. This is indicated, among others, by the number of construction of Buddhist houses of worship (viharas and chedi) which increased quite rapidly compared to the previous period. Also the number of Buddhist youth organizations continues to grow where the young generation of Buddhists, especially those from high school and college students are increasingly interested in studying Buddhism.
Of course, to serve and provide information about Buddhism to the community, a number of adequate Buddhist extension workers and teachers are needed, which at that time could be said to be still minimal. Therefore, several Buddhist religious institutions tried to conduct short training/training for Buddhist extension workers and teachers who already existed at that time to improve the quality of understanding of Buddhism.
Due to limited capabilities, this activity could not be carried out regularly with a wider level of service. Therefore, some Buddhist extension workers and teachers try to learn independently (auto-learning), for example by actively reading and searching for literature on Buddhism. However, one thing is certain, the pressure to overcome the minimal number of needs for Buddhist extension workers and teachers is getting stronger. Based on this condition, several Buddhist figures in North Sumatra agreed to establish a formal higher education institution that is expected to be able to overcome this problem.
The Birth of the Indonesian Buddha Dharma Institute (IBDI) and the Medan Branch of the Smaratungga Institute of Buddhist Studies (IIAB)
The Indonesian Buddha Dharma Institute (IBDI) was founded in August 1984 by (the late) Swabodhi Rusli, a Buddhist figure from Medan City, located on Jalan Pribadi Medan. Lectures are held every Sunday. IBDI has contributed greatly to producing Buddhist teachers who are now spread across schools in both Sumatra and Java.
The Smaratungga Institute of Buddhist Studies (IIAB) is actually located in Ampel, Boyolali, Central Java Province. However, on the recommendation of (the late) Father Hadi and the struggle of Buddhist figures in Medan City, IIAB was established in Medan City as a branch of the main campus in Boyolali. Lectures are held every Monday-Friday. As with IBDI, this institute also produces many Buddhist teachers. The location of the lectures moves because the foundation has not been able to have permanent campus facilities.
The Birth of the Bodhi Dharma Buddhist College (STAB)
Because it is constrained by government regulations, IIAB Smaratungga is not allowed to establish a branch. On the other hand, IBDI must also change its status to a college. So to overcome this problem, Mr. Tommy Tantawi, S.Ag (representing IBDI) and Ir. Eddy Suyono Setiawan, MM (representing IIAB Smaratungga Medan Branch) held discussions with the Director of Buddhist Affairs for Higher Education, Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia. The result of this discussion was that it was agreed that IBDI and IIAB Smaratungga Medan Branch would merge into one new name, namely Sekolah Tinggi Agama Buddhism (STAB) Bodhi Dharma, with a Decree from the Director General of Hinduism & Buddhism No. DJ.V / 53 / SK / 2002, dated August 5, 2002. In September 2003, STAB Bodhi Dharma began operating. Lectures were temporarily held at a private school, Jalan Letjend S.Parman Medan, with an initial number of students of around 35 people. However, since August 2006, STAB Bodhi Dharma has had a permanent address at Jalan Sawi number 26.
In 2010, STAB Bodhi Dharma moved and was located at the Bodhicitta Medan Buddhist College at Jl. Selam No. 39-41 Medan, In 2016, STAB Bodhi Dharma moved and was located at Jl. Selam, Selam Indah Complex No. 23 L,
And on 03-03-2021, STAB Bodhi Dharma settled under the auspices of the Prasada Jinadhammo Mahathera Foundation, MMTC Complex, Jl. Williem Iskandar Jl. Pancing, Kenangan Baru, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra 20371
